A slow-moving storm in northern Japan, formerly Typhoon Maria, has caused heavy rainfall, swollen rivers, and traffic disruptions during a Buddhist holiday week. Making landfall near Ofunato City, it prompted 170,000 residents in Iwate and nearby prefectures to seek shelter. Authorities warned of flooding and mudslides but reported no damages or injuries so far.
